Fitness Influencer F*ckery 🤦‍♂️ (“Plate Exercises”)

Quick Fitness Workout
A common “muscle building exercise” you’ll often see on fitness social media are “plate exercises”. I’m not saying that these plate exercises “don’t work” or that you can’t use them in your fitness program if you really enjoy it. There could be some very niche uses for them here and there, particularly if you’re doing lighter high rep sets where grip/stability is not as much of a factor. What I am saying is that in *most* cases weight plates will be an inferior choice for your fitness program if you’re training with the goal of maximizing hypertrophy. Taking basic bodybuilding exercises like chest presses, rows, overhead presses, lateral raises, curls etc. and replacing a basic barbell/dumbbell/cable/machine with a weight plate will usually just produce a less effective version of the same movement for the reasons given in the video. Always remember that just because someone posts themselves performing a particular exercise as part of their bodybuilding workout does NOT necessarily mean that that’s how they actually built their physique or that they even use that movement in real life to build muscle currently. For accounts where swipe workouts are the main form of content, they *have* to continue coming up with these “unique” muscle growth exercises otherwise they’d very quickly run out of things to post. The plain fact is that most people build the majority of their muscle through basic progressive overload on relatively straightforward exercises. When was the last time you were in the gym and saw an experienced lifter doing chest presses with a weight plate in each hand? Exactly.
